The Basilica of Santa Croce (Holy Cross) in Jerusalem is located in Rome, in the Esquilino district, near the Aurelian Walls and Castrense Amphitheater, between St. John Lateran Basilica and Basilica of Saint Mary Major. The Basilica of Santa Croce is part of the “Seven Churches” route that ancient pilgrims used to visit by foot.
The current appearance of the building dates back to the eighteenth century. Architects Pietro Passalacqua and Domenico Gregorini, at the will of Pope Benedict XIV, changed the interior and exterior of the church, creating an elliptical atrium and replacing the medieval façade with a modern travertine façade. In the new façade they alternated, with a clever visual effect, concave and convex volumes according to true Baroque taste.
The Basilica has many visitors during Holy Week because it preserves important relics of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ: Three fragments of the Holy Cross, two thorns of the Crown of Jesus, one of the nails and the INRI sign of the Crucifixion, meaning "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews" .
The Basilica is open for visitation from Monday to Saturday from 9:30 to 17:00 and Sunday and holidays from 14:00 to 17:00.
Considered one of the most famous Catholic churches in the world, the beautiful Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano is located in central Rome, just a 20-minute walk from the Colosseum. It is also the oldest church and ranks first in the five papal basilicas in the world. It was built in the early 4th century and opened in 324, under Constantine.
Today, the Basilica of St. John Lateran retains its perfect condition of Baroque style, even after undergoing the last restoration. It is a must see attraction in Rome.
Next to the Basilica is the Aurelian Wall and the Lateran Obelisk, the largest obelisk in Rome at over 32 meters high. It was brought from the temple of Amon in Thebes in Egypt by Constantine II in the year 357 and first placed in Circus Maximus.
The Basilica is also very special for the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On November 3, 2018, the foundress of the Congregation, Mother Clelia Merloni, was beatified in a beautiful ceremony.
The Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran is open daily from 7am to 6.30pm.
